What is God's call on your life?

Believe it or not, it is never too late to figure out precisely what God wants you to do. And it might even change at different points and places. It may look a bit unique for each of us. But there will be some similarities.

Moses was already eighty years old when he encountered the burning bush. On some level we can hope that those were "Genesis years" and maybe they were counted a little unconventionally, but either way, it is clear that God intended to work through someone with more life experience - and it is never too late, as one wise pastor has said, to get up off our blessed assurances and do something for God.

Now, luckily, most of us are not called to stand against entire empire to bring an oppressed people to a whole other place at over one hundred and twenty years old. I know personally it is not just the daunting nature of that particular job that freaks me out, but also the sheer wear and tear on my bones that sounds exhausting.

In our case, God's call comes in smaller, much more everyday ways.

Rabbi Tarfon once said, "Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it."

It is true that our world is in chaos. But it is also true that our whole world is God's holy ground. Spaces where we are given opportunities to do the work that God has given to us: to show grace. To give compassion. To listen intently. To welcome abundantly. To love fervently.

To find our neighbors near and far every chance we get. That is our call.

We can be consumed by the grief and fear of the world gone mad.

Or we can be consumed by the love of a God who spoke through a bush of fire that people could be made truly free in this life and the next. We can be consumed and set loose to do what we can, when we can here and now. Bit by bit.

It is a choice we get to make every day.

Blessings,

Rev. Janie
