One Busy Week

Oh what a week!

It has been a joy and a kerfuffle this week as we dove deeply into God's lovingkindness at #CompassionCampVBS!!! With sixteen children and nearly as many grownups, there was never dull moment as we danced, sang, acted, crafted, re-created, welcomed, ate, and played together across the five afternoons. There is no way to say enough of a thank you to all of the helpers who made this week possible - especially our tri-chairs: Sarah Heim, Stephanie Fernandez, and Beth Jones!

In addition, we finish the week out with the 161st anniversary of #Juneteenth - a day when we commemorate and celebrate the reality that we as a nation to continue to strive toward our ideals. For none of them have ever been fully realized.

Lest we forget, on July 19, 1865, it was in Galveston, Texas, across our very own state, when the last chattel slaves learned that they were free in this country. Because liberty and justice for all is complicated. We teach our children such wondrous words, and yet, as we grow we learn the reality that our nation remains a "great unfinished symphony." But still we get up and try again.

This weekend we will be looking at the third of the Beatitudes - "blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." Perhaps the most abused of the beatitudes, the meaning of "meek" is not what most think. For it is not weakness, nor does it imply we should ask or require some to be doormats. The word has to do with choosing to reserve our strength and choosing how and when we fight - so that all will one day have the flourishing lives God desires.

So, come to church. Learn about VBS. Learn more about Juneteenth. Learn more about the Beatitudes. And Dads, don't forget we will have a little special something for you in Fellowship. See you soon!

Blessings,

Rev. Janie
