Beloved

This weekend is our annual worship & picnic out in God's glorious creation!
When we originally began planning this service in the early summer, we knew that we would have new members joining. In a wonderful unicorn moment for us (a.k.a. an exceedingly rare and beautiful), these new members were grown-ups who have never been baptized. And this seemed like a fabulous opportunity to celebrate a dunking for our church, which almost never gets to happen.
But then life happened. And plans changed - and God's merciful grace abounds.
One of the reasons for the artwork this weekend, which depicts Jesus at his own baptism, is that in this particular vision Jesus finds himself completely pulled under. It is not just the water that surrounds him, but the enormity of life and the weight of all that will come crashing down upon him.
Quite often that can feel beyond overwhelming for any of us. And yet, in the midst of being engulfed, we know that God is there. Intentionally claiming this Child made in God's own image. Calling them beloved.
Of all the meanings of baptism, one that we often overlook is that baptism should remind us of God's perpetual presence in our lives. No matter what may come. No matter how much it may feel like the world is going to push us under and never let us go.
God is still there. Claiming. Calling. Holding us up until the swell is over.
So, we hope you will bring your swimsuits as we joyfully remember our baptisms this weekend with a very special worship, picnic, and pool party!!!
Blessings,
Rev. Janie
